Sleep-friendly essential oils for your little loves (and tired parents, too)

In combination with creating good sleep habits, essential oils can be a useful tool in helping your child relax and experience better sleep. Sleepy Little Loves is proud to share the opportunity to purchase high quality doTERRA® oils with our friends and clients.

Below are some popular sleep favorites.

Looking for ways integrate oils into your child's bed and nap time routines?

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in plants that are extracted and distilled for health benefits – like sleep. The trick is finding which ones will work best for your child. Everyone’s body is a little bit different chemically, and what might send one toddler into dreamland may not work as well for the next. Luckily, there are many essential oils that promote healthy sleep, so you have many options to choose from in finding that magic combination.  Here are some great ways to bring these tools into your routine as suggested by my friend, essential oils expert Alyssa Serchia.

 1.    Bath time

Adding just 1-2 drops of essential oil into your little one’s bath water not only makes for a great smelling bath, but the oils will also enter your child’s body through their skin, helping them to relax from the cellular level. Bonus: When little ones are feeling under the weather, you can also add immune supporting oils to help them feel better more quickly.

2.    Massage

Giving your baby a gentle massage with lotion may already be a part of your bedtime routine. It’s a wonderful way to bond and calm down. Adding essential oils to your nightly massage is another great way for your child to experience the calming benefits. Dilute 2-5 drops in a small jar of coconut oil or in a 10 ml roller bottle. Massage into their back, legs and feet.

3.    Oily Toes

Applying essential oils directly to the big toe is one of the most effective places to apply oils topically, especially for kids. The skin is less sensitive, it’s absorbed quickly, and you don’t have to worry about it getting in their mouth (although most doTERRA oils are safe to ingest). Depending on what your child might be struggling with, putting a drop (diluted in a carrier oil like coconut oil) on their big toes can provide great support for things like tummy discomfort, teething pain, and just helping them calm down.

4.    Diffuse

Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways for kids of any age and the whole family to experience the therapeutic and emotional benefits. Having a diffuser running in the evening hours leading up to bedtime can help with winding down, and many people choose to place a diffuser in their child’s room. Only 1-2 drops are needed for several hours of calming aroma.

It’s important to note that you should only use pure, certified therapeutic grade essential oils for your children (and yourself!). They are very concentrated so they should always be diluted for little ones – a little bit goes a long way!
